Qué hacer frente al serio problema de la leucosis bovina.

Abstract

La leucosis bovina está considerada como la segunda de las enfermedades neoplásicas, después del carcinoma ocular en cuanto a frecuencia se refiere, pero es considerada como la más importante desde el punto de vista económico. Si bien es cierto que la mortalidad es relativamente baja (5 por ciento), las mayores pérdidas están representadas por disminución en la producción, trastornos reproductivos y principalmente por los gastos que conllevan los tratamientos sintomáticos que en la mayoría de los casos realiza el ganadero para tratar de recuperar un animal enfermo. La elevada difusión de la leucosis bovina es favorecida por una gran variedad de factores entre los cuales se incluyen la presencia de insectos hematófagos, demasiada promiscuidad, sistemas tradicionales de crianza y algunas prácticas profilácticas como vacunaciones, transfusiones, cirugías. Actualmente, las investigaciones sobre la leucosis bovina están siendo encaminadas hacia la búsqueda de sistemas adecuados para evitar su propagación y así poder emprender campañas para su control o erradicación
