This thesis aims to investigate and identify how the elements of Old Norse Language in the discourse of the “Nordic Asa-Community” are constructing a “neo-traditionalist” Swedish identity. The identity theories, introduced by Anderson et al. (2006), are employed to address the concept of identity development and the construction of Nordic homogeneity. Furthermore, the study applies a qualitative research design, combining a case study framework with netnographic and critical discourse analysis to reveal motives and implications of these practices and offer an evaluation of contemporary Swedish attitudes and opinions regarding this phenomenon. The data was collected by conducting semi-structured interviews and using texts from the community’s website and “Facebook” platform. The semi-structured interviews of 6 respondents were conducted to understand how the respondents are familiar with the Nordic Heathenry, how they interpret the motivation behind the Old Norse language utilization in the “Nordic Asa-Community” discourse and what are the attitudes towards the construction of “neo-traditionalist” Swedish identity. The results revealed that a significant portion of the “Nordic Asa-Community” discourse ascribes to the ideas of reinvention of traditions found within the neo-traditionalist ideology. The analyzed data from the interviews shows movement being aligned with the most of contemporary Swedish values, while, on the other hand, the respondents have a skeptical outlook of Nordic Heathenry revitalization.
