Fungi of genus Trichoderma are widely used in agriculture as a biocontrol agent; however, the medicinal use of this microorganism was not explored until recent years [1]. It is accepted that the success of Trichoderma in the field of agriculture is due to its ability to produce a vast variety of secondary metabolites [2]. This study explores what effect different nutritional mediums have on T. harzianum spore and secondary metabolite production. Sporulation of each sample was first evaluated spectroscopically and later quantitively estimated using a serial dilution method. For the detection of secondary metabolites, various colorimetric tests were performed, notably – modified Arnow’s test for catecholate type siderophore detection. Early results suggest that samples grown on malt extract medium supplemented with CaCl2, as well as on 10% malt extract medium, shown an increase in number of spores produced, meanwhile, malt extract medium with CaCl2 added at the beginning of sporulation, showed a significant decrease in spore production. Experiments with catecholate type siderophores revealed that malt extract medium with CaCl2 showed a slight increase in production compared to control medium, while the rest showed a decrease. These preliminary results demonstrate that by modifying various growth factors such as media composition and stress, we can stimulate T. harzianum to produce bigger amounts of beneficial metabolites that could be used in the pharmaceutical industry.
