Alan Mikhail gelişmekte olan Osmanlı çevre tarihi alanının en üretken isimlerinden biridir. Nature and Empire in Ottoman Egypt: An Environmental History ve The Animal in Ottoman Egypt başlıklı kitapların yazarı olan Mikhail, alanın önde gelen uzmanlarınca kaleme alınan makalelerin derlendiği Water on Sand: Environmental Histories of the Middle East and North Africa adlı çalışmanın da editörlüğünü yapmıştır. Mikhail’in bu yazıya konu ettiğimiz son kitabı, Under Osman’s Tree: The Ottoman Empire, Egypt, and Environmental History Osmanlı Mısır’ı ve çevre tarihi ile ilgili daha önceki araştırmalarının gözden geçirilmiş ve genişletilmiş halidir.
