Dysertacja składa się z czterech rozdziałów te­matycznych. Omówiono w nich podstawowe kwestie związane z ikonografią św. Franciszka właściwe dla nowożytnego malarstwa w Polsce. We wstępie pracy starano się odnieść do za­kresu występowania materiału zabytkowego pod kątem topografii. W pierwszym rozdziale poru­szono zagadnienia związane z problematyką oddziaływania najstarszych przekazów hagiograficznych na kształtowanie się ikonografii św. Franciszka w sztuce Zachodu. Omówiono w nim kwestie biograficzne, które pozwoliły przybliżyć życiorys świętego i jego kult. Drugi rozdział to analiza problematyki obrazowania idei Franciscus alter Christus ze szczególnym naciskiem na malarstwo nowożytne. W trzecim rozdziale scharakteryzowano sceny wizji mistycznych oraz przedstawienia wielopostaciowe o wymowie symboliczno-alegorycznej. W czwartym, ostat­nim rozdziale dysertacji, zaprezentowano atrybuty indywidualne św. Franciszka oraz zdefiniowano ich funkcje sceniczne. W zakończeniu za­sygnalizowano potrzebę aktualizacji badań nad ikonografią św. Franciszka w sztuce polskiej oraz podjęcia na nowo problematyki recepcji wzorów ikonograficznych związanych z obrazowaniem świętych zakonu franciszkańskiego w nowożytnym malarstwie polskim. The dissertation consists of four thematic chapters. They discuss the basic issues related to the iconography of Saint Francis in modern age Polish painting. The introduction addresses the range of historical material in terms of topography. The first chapter deals with the influence of the earliest hagiographic accounts on the shaping of Saint Francias iconography in Western art. Biographical issues that bring closer the saint’s life and cult are discussed. The second chapter analyzes the depiction of the idea of Francis as alter Christus, with particular emphasis on modern age painting. The third chapter characterizes scenes of mystical visions and multi-figure representations with symbolic- allegorical meaning. The fourth and last chapter of the dissertation presents Saint Francis’s individual attributes and defines their scenic functions. In conclusion, the need for updating research on the iconography of Saint Francis in Polish art and revisiting the reception of iconographic models related to the depiction of saints of the Franciscan Order in modern age Polish painting is highlighted.
