Los BRICs entre la multipolaridad y la unipolaridad en el siglo XXI

Abstract

En un ya lejano noviembre de 2001 Jim O’Neill, entonces jefe del departamento de investigación económica global en la sede londinense del grupo Goldman Sachs —uno de los mayores bancos y consultores de inversión mundial— pondría la denominación de origen a un previsible nuevo imperio de economías ascendientes quienes, según sus evaluaciones, en términos generales serían los encargados de liderar la recuperación económica mundial, pues tan solo en la década anterior el consumo interno de los cuatro países BRIC —según el acrónimo construido a partir de los nombres de los países que lo integrarían— había sido más fuerte que el consumo interno de los Estados Unidos, lo cual habría conducido a un nuevo estado de cosas porque se estaba frente a una situación muy inusual donde las partes más fuertes del mundo —en términos de desarrollo económico— se encontraban en los llamados países en desarrollo.1
