Un nuevo estrógeno: estetrol

Abstract

A nivel mundial se ha aprobado un nuevo anticonceptivo oral combinado que utiliza estetrol (E4), un tipo de estrógeno con un perfil farmacológico novedoso y selectivo en diferentes tejidos. Aunque el estetrol fue descubierto en los años 60, su uso como anticonceptivo fue aprobado en 2020 tras estudios que demostraron su eficacia y un perfil de seguridad prometedor, especialmente en cuanto a menor riesgo trombótico y efectos secundarios reducidos. Presenta ventajas farmacocinéticas como alta biodisponibilidad, metabolismo reducido en interacciones y una vida media prolongada que mejora la adherencia. Su control del ciclo menstrual es comparable a otros anticonceptivos combinados. Se requiere vigilancia postcomercialización para confirmar sus ventajas teóricas en la población general.
