The expression that refers to social education as a young profession in Uruguay is widespread. Without ignoring that it is comparatively so in relation to other institutions in the social and educational field, the training of social educators has been going on for more than thirty years in our country. During this time, an important accumulation of professional practices has been generated and progress has been made in terms of publications that address both the social and professional educator as well as their practices. However, there is practically no research regarding the profession and even less regarding the training of social educators. From the conviction that the profession requires situated and specific production of knowledge, this research seeks to contribute to the understanding of the learning of the profession of social educators in their training, particularly from their practical courses. The category of knowledge of the trade is taken to identify, from the perspective of social education students, the production of that knowledge that becomes tools for the deployment of the professional function.

Es extendida la expresión que refiere a la educación social como una profesión joven en Uruguay. Sin desconocer que comparativamente lo es en relación con otras del campo social y educativo, la formación de educadores sociales lleva más de treinta años en nuestro país. En este tiempo se ha generado un importante acumulado de prácticas profesionales y se han logrado avances en términos de publicaciones que abordan al educador social como profesional y a sus prácticas. No obstante, es muy escasa la investigación respecto al oficio y a la formación profesional de los educadores sociales. Desde el convencimiento de que la profesión exige producción de conocimiento situada y específica, esta investigación busca aportar a la comprensión del aprendizaje del oficio de los educadores sociales en su formación. Se toma la categoría saberes del oficio para identificar desde la perspectiva de los estudiantes de educación social, la producción de aquellos saberes que devienen en herramientas para el despliegue de la función profesional.
