Mejora genética de cítricos

Abstract

El objetivo de la mejora de plantas es obtener nuevas variedades con las características demandadas por el consumidor. Los programas de mejora constan básicamente de tres etapas: 1) búsqueda y aprovechamiento de variabilidad genética; 2) selección de las plantas con la combinación óptima de genes, y 3) comprobación en campo de que lo seleccionado es lo correcto y mejor que lo que hay en el mercado. Los cítricos tienen una gran variabilidad genética entre especies, que puede ser aprovechada mediante cruzamientos, y sin embargo está muy poco explotada todavía. El cultivo de los cítricos en España es de gran importancia económica, siendo el primer país exportador de fruta, especialmente mandarinas, para consumo directo; sin embargo, su vulnerabilidad es notable. Esta vulnerabilidad proviene del escaso número de patrones distintos utilizados, mayoritariamente el citrange “Carrizo”, para la propagación de naranjos y mandarinos.
