Abstract

El género Agrobacterium pertenece a la familia Rhizobiaceae Conn 1938, que comprende también los géneros Rhizobium, Bradyrhizobium y Phyllobacterium. Kersters y De Ley (1984) en la novena edición del Bergey's Manual señalan que según las normas de taxonomía bacteriana deben considerarse cuatro especies en el género Agrobacterium: A. tumefaciens, A. radiobacter, A. rhizogenes y A. rubi. La más estudiada es A. tumefaciens, causante de tumores en cuello, raíces y a veces en la parte aérea de numerosas plantas cultivadas y que agrupa a cepas de los biovares o biotipos 1, 2 y 3. La especie A. radiobacter comprende cepas que no son capaces de inducir ningún tipo de síntomas en las plantas y que pertenecen a los biovares 1 y 2. A. rhizogenes agrupa a las cepas causantes de raíces en cabellera que suelen pertenecer al biovar 2 y A. rubi causa tumores en el tallo de frambueso y ha sido muy poco estudiada. En su mayor parte, los distintos Agrobacterium son habitantes comunes del suelo y de la rizosfera de las plantas.
