Relação entre a Dor Orofacial e o Bruxismo

Abstract

OR (sleep bruxism) OR (awake bruxism) AND (orofacial pain) OR (facial discomfort)".

Pain in the orofacial region is a condition that affects a large part of the world population, and its relationship with dentistry has been the subject of more and more research, in order to better understand its origin. Bruxism is often considered a possible cause of orofacial pain, however there is controversy when it comes to the cause-and-effect relationship proven in scientific studies. The aim of the present study was to establish the relationship between bruxism and orofacial pain through an integrative systematic review, to identify which type of bruxism is most related to orofacial pain and to verify which population is most affected by it. For this purpose, a research was carried out in the Pubmed and EBSCO portals, with the keywords "((bruxism) [Title / Abstract]) OR (sleep bruxism) OR (awake bruxism) AND (orofacial pain) OR (facial discomfort)". Of the 820 articles found, 22 articles most relevant to this study were selected. Most authors who referenced bruxism, both types of it, through questionnaires and clinical examinations, found a positive relationship between them and the DOF. The studies that proposed to study patients with bruxism with the aid of polysomnography, found no cause-effect relationship between sleep bruxism and DOF. Awake bruxism was found to be more related to orofacial pain, and the population most affected by it was the female, with a mean age of 36 years.
