Abstract

A Diabetes Mellitus é uma desordem metabólica crónica de etiologia desconhecida caracterizada por um fenótipo de hiperglicemia que provém de deficiência na ação e/ou secreção de insulina, o que conduz a alterações no metabolismo dos hidratos de carbono, lípidos e proteínas. Na presença desta condição poderemos observar várias manifestações orais que pretendo abordar ao longo deste relatório de estágio, entre elas, periodontite, gengivite, xerostomia e prevalência de cáries aumentada apenas quando existe baixo controlo glicémico. Os objetivos principais são adquirir conhecimento mais aprofundado da Diabetes Mellitus e dos seus tipos, incidindo principalmente no tipo I por ser o mais presente nas crianças, tomar conhecimento das implicações na cavidade oral e o tipo de abordagem relativamente ao tratamento. Crianças diabéticas enfrentam vários problemas durante o curso das suas vidas, os problemas de saúde oral estão entre eles, e considerando as inúmeras particularidades destes pacientes, sendo parte delas a diminuição da resposta imunológica e inflamatória, este deve ser tratado como um paciente especial. Assim, compete ao médico dentista estar preparado para tratar estes pacientes com a correta terapêutica e para realizar a educação e promoção necessária.
