Fuegos cruzados : Estética vanguardista e ideología conservadora en "Retrato do Brasil" de Paulo Prado

Abstract

Los textos del ensayista brasileño Paulo Prado operan como puntos de articulación privilegiados entre la ideología finisecular y la vanguardia, y entre el ensayo social positivista y el culturalista de la década de 1930, y exponen abiertamente la tensión entre fracturas y continuidades ideológicas que atraviesa la vanguardia modernista. Este trabajo aborda dos textos de Prado, centrales en el ensayismo brasileño de la década de 1920: Paulística y Retrato do Brasil. Por una parte, atiende a la tensión que sesga la obra de Prado entre conservadurismo ideológico y vanguardia estética, considerándola una instancia privilegiada para poner en evidencia los puntos de contacto entre la oligarquía y el modernismo (ese contacto constituye un rasgo peculiar y persistente en las vanguardias latinoamericanas, y obliga a repensar las articulaciones entre clase social y subgrupos culturales). Al mismo tiempo, analiza los lazos estrechos que estos ensayos, al pensar la alteridad social y la identidad nacional, establecen con el ensayismo decimonónico y con el discurso colonial inaugurado con la conquista y colonización del Brasil.
