Abstract

The Registrum epistularum of Gregory the Great (590-604) reports several episodes concerning people, both religious and lay, who left mainland Italy because of the threat of the Lombards and took shelter in Sicily. This created criticai situations for the Pope to deal with, such as the dispersion of religious communities, and the impoverishment of the patrimony of St. Peter
