The Chinese Diaspora in Canada: Art-Based Research and Research-Based Art

Abstract

This project investigates immigration issues and the history of the Chinese diaspora in Canada. The research incorporates reading history and using the Canadian Archives to find photographs that provide visual evidence of the history, themes, and culture from texts like Gold Mountain, by Anthony B. Chan. Located images from the late 18th and early 20th century are then used as source imagery for paintings. The painting process allows for articulation of the themes of the photographs, the significance of Chinese migration history, connections to contemporary culture surrounding the topic of race, and the artist’s personal connection to the Chinese diaspora.
