Art is integral to our daily lives and is vital to a vibrant, healthy community.Community art, notably theatre, is accessible and is not impeded by high ticket/admission prices to view it. Community theatre can refer to a self appointed,self-determining group of people creating theatre for a common purpose; professional artists collaborating with a community; or theatre which is created on behalf of a culturally disadvantaged community. In all instances, community consultation and dialogue is crucial to the creative process. Culturally,a community, like any other organisation, is constructed and developed by its members who contribute to the group their own individual sets of life experiences, personal ethos, belief system, and perspective. Community theatre is not just about imparting or communicating messages; it is about the act of communication. Theatre affects participants, who in turn, influence each other aswell as the art that is being created. If theatre is to serve the needs of a community in the form of an audience, it must seek to ensure those audience members are actively engaged rather than passive observers. An audience engagement increases the likelihood for social activism and change. As such, community theatre has purpose. It can be a vehicle for a community's cultural development, arts enrichment, public awareness, or be a voice for social change.
