Sosial kapital -: hvor kommer det fra?

Abstract

I denne masteroppgaven undersøker jeg ulike antagelser om hvor sosial kapital kommer fra, og hvordan den blir opprettholdt. Jeg jobber ut i fra følgende problemstilling: Hvor kommer sosial kapital fra? Ut i fra eksisterende teori på området utleder jeg fem hypoteser, hvorav fire har alternative hypoteser. Det er altså totalt ni hypoteser i oppgaven. Disse hypotesene søker jeg svar på ved hjelp av en regresjonsanalyse av tverrsnittsdata. Oppgavens funn er ikke entydige, og avdekker et misforhold mellom teorien på området, og empirien i Norge. Det er blant enkelte forskere en oppfatning om at sosial kapital dannes når mennesker med ulik sosial bakgrunn møtes og samhandler ansikt-til-ansikt. Dette finner jeg ingen empiriske bevis for. Tvert om avdekker oppgaven en sammenheng mellom tillit til samfunnets institusjoner og generell tillit, noe som svekker denne oppfatningen. Medlemskap blir funnet å ha en positiv sammenheng med sosial kapital, men sammenhengen ser altså ikke ut til å skyldes ansikt-til-ansikt-kontakt i organisasjonene. En potensiell forklaring på den positive sammenhengen kan være at bredden på et individts deltakelse er positivt korrelert med bestanddeler av sosial kapital. Denne teksten operasjonaliserer sosial kapital som tre-delt, og bestående av generell tillit, vertikal tillit samt politisk interesse.
