Samfunnsengasjement blant ungdom – ein klassebasert affære? Eit kvantitativt studie av sosial klasse sin påverknad på utviklinga av ikkje-digitalt og digitalt samfunnsengasjement blant ungdom

Abstract

The overarching goal of this dissertation has been to examine the impact of social class on the development of non-digital and digital civic engagement, and further examine how these different dimensions are linked. To investigate this, a quantitative approach has been applied in the form of three separate multivariate linear regression analyses. When it comes to the class and individualisation debate, the debate has been characterized by two different extremes; social class and its continuous role as an organizing structure and the conceptual “death of the class”. Regarding civic engagement, research has been characterized by a trend of declining civic engagement among youth, often linked to digitalization, individualization and globalization. The starting point is social class in the sense of Pierre Bourdieu´s understanding, of which the concepts of economic and cultural capital also forms a significant part of the final understanding in this dissertation. These aspects are important to include, as different compositions of economic and cultural capital could serve as indicators linked to class differences. This, in turn, can also determine possibilities and flexibility related to civic engagement among youth. Furthermore, civic engagement is a complex concept, where different understandings of specific activities, levels and arenas will determine how it is understood and expressed. On this basis, three separate dimensions were distinguished; non-digital civic engagement, digital «high-cost» civic engagement and digital «low-cost» civic engagement. The purpose of this dissertation was therefore to investigate how social class and different compositions of economic and cultural capital served as important prerequisites for the development of different types of civic engagement among youth, and to advance an understanding of how these are dimensions that must be considered in light of each other. The ambition was to nuance the conceptualization of civic engagement as a social phenomenon based on social class, economic and cultural capital, and thus gain better insight into the key driving forces behind the development of civic engagement among youth. The overarching research question for the dissertation is; "what role does social class play in the development of non-digital and digital civic engagement among youth, and how are the different dimensions linked together?". To answer this research question, a Swiss data set from 2012 was used, with the theme "informal and formal engagement of young people". The theoretical framework for the dissertation is based on relevant sociological research, and consists of both older and recent contributions. These are useful for supporting, nuancing and highlighting the developments in terms of research on this specific topic. The findings of the paper indicate that there are several key prerequisites linked to social class, economic capital, cultural capital and socio-demographic factors, that influence the type and degree of civic engagement among youth. Key differences and similarities associated with the three different forms of civic engagement were also identified. One recurring finding related to influence on the three types of civic engagement, is specifically linked to gender. Male adolescents have a significantly higher likelihood of having both non-digital, digital "high-cost" and digital "low-cost" civic engagement. More centrally, however, several of the findings indicated that social class, as well as economic and cultural capital, affect these various forms of civic engagement among youth.
