The structure and function of research meetings at the Section for General Practice at the University of Bergen are described in this article. The empirical basis is an interview with two participants, and results from regular evaluation meetings. The research meetings are held on a weekly basis, and both faculty and fellows are expected to present their work each semester. The focus of the present article is to demonstrate that peer mentoring is an important aspect of the meetings, and to address issues contributing to successful mentoring. Likewise, potential obstacles are being presented. In short, a friendly atmosphere, constructive criticism and regular attendance are critical success factors, whereas negative communication and lack of prepared participants are potential destructive factors. A perceived hierarchical structure may work beneficially as long as other success factors simultaneously are at play.
