Daar worden ze geregeld blootgesteld aan haast perfecte content van anderen. Socia-lemediagebruikers lijken vaak zowel een heel aantrekkelijk uiterlijk te hebben alsook een enorm interessant leven te leiden. Blootstelling aan die positivity bias kan adolescenten jaloers doen voelen maar meer recent onderzoek toont aan dat zulke perfecte posts ook inspirerend kunnen zijn. Het is echter onduidelijk voor wie en hoe vaak blootstelling aan perfecte posts van anderen gevoelens van jaloezie of juist inspiratie oproept. In deze studie wordt onderzocht of de sociale mediawijsheid van adolescenten daar een rol in speelt. Sociale mediawijsheid betreft de cognitieve en affectieve competenties die adolescenten kunnen helpen om de risico's van socialemediagebruik te minimaliseren en de kansen daarvan te maximaliseren. In de context van de positivity bias gaan cognitieve competenties over het kunnen herkennen van socialemediacontent waarin sprake is van een positivity bias, het beseffen dat zulke content onrealistisch is, en het kunnen begrijpen waarom mensen zulke content posten. Affectieve competenties gaan over het in staat zijn om op een adaptieve manier emoties te reguleren die opkomen wanneer een adolescent met positivity bias-content in aanraking komt.
