For a long time, different readers, from Vittorio Imbriani to Benedetto Croce, have ignored the considerable debt of the Neapolitan Giambattista Basile towards the Bergamo-born Giovan Francesco Straparola. Despite their different poetic and moral positions, the tales of the "Pentamerone" (1634-1636) ‘stole’ several pages from the tales included in the "Piacevoli notti" (1550 e 1553). After Croce, thanks to the study of Marziano Guglielminetti, the recent criticism has recognized and finely analyzed these 'thefts' or rewritings by Basile.
