Abstract

Even though it can be an attractive proposition for an elderly person, the idea of living with a family, or even their own family, should not be undertaken lightly. The author suggests three ways in which nurses can help; communication, sharing of responsibilities and coping with the burden. The main goal is to curb abuse of the elderly, a result of the enormous burden that falls on the shoulders of the caregiver. The solution to this situation is not easy. However, a simple tool in the form of a contract between the two parties, could be helpful. The author maintains that, regardless of pre-existing family relationships, it's best to look at this contract from a strictly objective point of view. All the factors that could come into play should be clearly stated by both parties. In this way, they will be better able to avoid misunderstandings and head off potential conflicts.
