
Le vocable COV recouvre une grande variété de substances chimiques ayant pour point commun d'être des composés du carbone et d'être volatils à température ambiante. Ceux-ci peuvent être regroupés au sein de grandes familles définies en fonction de leur formule chimique, dont chacune possède des propriétés particulières, bien qu'il puisse exister parfois des différences majeures au plan toxicité. Les COV sont à considérer de façon individuelle en fonction de leur spécificité toxique, mais aussi de façon globale, en raison de propriétés toxiques communes, mais aussi du rôle qu'ils jouent dans la formation des polluants photo-oxydants dans l'environnement extérieur et intérieur
The term volatile organi compounds includes a wide variety of chemical substances with the common feature of being carbon compounds that are volatile at ambient temperature. They can be classified into different families defined by their chemical formulae, each of which possesses common properties, although there may be major differences in terms of toxicity. For that reason the effects of VOC on health have to be considered both in an individual way and also from a global viewpoint on account of their common toxic properties and the role they play in the formation of environmental photo-oxidative pollutants, both outdoors and indoors
