Abstract

Este estudio es una valoración económica del Parque Nacional Coiba (PNC) y la adyacente Zona Especial de Protección Marina (ZEPM). El enfoque del estudio son los valores de uso más importantes: la pesca y el turismo. La investigación fue elaborada como insumo para el Plan de Manejo del PNC que se está desarrollando bajo la coordinación de la Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente (ANAM) y el Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI). El Parque Nacional Coiba se encuentra localizado en las Bahías de Chiriquí y Montijo, en el sector Pacífico Occidental de Panamá. El parque fue establecido en 1991, pero no fue hasta 2004 cuando se creó la Ley 44, de 26 de julio de 2004, que elevó al parque a la máxima categoría de protección. En total, el PNC cuenta con una superficie de 254,822 hectáreas, de las cuales 201,280 (79%) son áreas marinas protegidas. Adicionalmente, existe un área adyacente al PNC con categoría de Zona Especial de Protección Marina (ZEPM), con una extensión de 160,000 hectáreas. Ambas áreas, la del PNC y la ZEPM fueron incluidas en la lista de Sitios de Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad en 2005.
