Factores antropogénicos y tenores de fuentes contaminantes de la Bahía de Nipe, Cuba.

Abstract

La Bahía de Nipe está ubicada en la costa nor-oriental de Cuba, provincia de Holguín, a los 20º50’ de latitud norte y los 75º40’ de longitud oeste. Es una de las mayores bahías de bolsa del mundo y la primera de nuestro territorio, con una superficie de 220 Km2 y profundidades medias que oscilan entre 9 y 25 metros. Este inmenso acuatorio tiene un volumen de agua de 1700 millones de metros cúbicos que se recambia en un tiempo aproximado de 10 a 15 días, con una tasa media diaria de recambio del 10% (Romero y Suárez, 1993)(Fig. 1). Esta bahía es un cuerpo de agua productivo, dinámico y saludable, sin embargo presenta contaminación de origen orgánico y nutrientes en las áreas costeras (Suárez et al., 1997 y Arencibia et al., 1999) cercanas al sector industrial, deterioros en sus paisajes, en particular la degradación de la Playa Juan Vicente, la coloración rojiza de las aguas, la disminución del área de manglares y condiciones organolépticas no deseables en las áreas costeras de los sectores urbano-industriales (Palacios y Beltrán, 1993). La misma constituye un ecosistema muy sensible, de gran interés biológico y socioeconómico, circunstancias que hacen especialmente grave la continuación de la agresión medioambiental que viene sufriendo. Dada la necesidad de mitigar y controlar el impacto de la contaminación originada por las fuentes terrestres sobre los recursos costeros de la Bahía de Nipe, el presente trabajo se propone el reconocimiento de las mismas y la identificación del tipo y los niveles de contaminantes que son vertidos.
