Abstract

Fishery data (between latitudes 03 ~' 20'S y 00~' 45' N) from four research cruises conducted by the B/I ”Tohalli” of the National Fisheries Institute, during the years 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 off the coast of Ecuador. Was analyzed the species and diversity richness of macroinvertebrates benthic fauna and its distribution by sub-areas (A, B, C and D) and depth layers: 10-30 m, 31-80 m and 81-200 m. 150 species were identified, 120 crustaceans, 15 mollusks, 13 echinoderms and two cnidarians. The average diversity estimated (H') was from moderate to low (2,58, 1,86, 2,50 and 1,26) for the four cruises. The highest species richness and diversity index with the highest values were recorded in the subareas A and B, and in layers I and II. No significant differences in diversity among cruises and between the layers of depth was observed. The most abundant species in the cruises were: for crustaceans species of commercial importance such as the ”jaibas” Protunus iridescens, Callinectes arcuatus, Callinectes toxotes y ”camarón rojo” Farfantepenaeus brevirostris and among shellfish the ”cigar or tube squid” Loliolopsis diomedeae, were found.
