This chapter explores the interactions between the social science literature ion social movements and civil society, and considers both differences and similarities in their conceptualization as well as in the actual evolution of the social actors that have been identified as part of the two. The chapter begins by discussing the analytical relations between these two concepts, before moving on to illustrate some of the tensions that have emerged in their relationships and concluding by showing how these tensions have evolved over time and might be resolved in the future.
