Abstract

The article reports on the role of social support in curing the illness of a patient. Research has shown that poorer social networks in older adults can increase the risk of dementia by 60 percent. The positive benefits of companion animals has been long suggested for improving social network. Friends and family may mistakenly believe that not having to care for an animal companion will make life easier for an older adult.
