In this lecture, I have tried to describe the evolution of the concept of a Head Injury Criterion-HIC-and the role of Federal funding agencies in the quest for a scientifically based theory of head injury. Various injury statistics are presented and the role of the Injury in America study in the founding of the Center for Injury Prevention and Control is discussed. The theory of finite element modeling and several head injury finite element models are summarized. A brief description of the new European Union (EU) Advanced Protective Systems Initiative SP5 Head Injury is provided.
