[The effect of nasal dilators and local decongestants on the nasal airway].

Abstract

Objectives: We evaluated the effect of external nasal dilator strips and local decongestants used either alone or in combination on the nasal airvvay.Subjects and Methods: The study included 23 volun- teer males mean age 24.3 years; range 21 to 36 years with no complaints of nasal obstruction. Nasal airvvay dimensions vvere measured by acoustic rhinometry after the follovving applications: i no application; ii a placebo strip; İH a nasal dilator; iv a local decongestant; v a local decongestant follovved by a placebo strip; and vi a local decongestant follovved by a nasal dilator. Cross sectional areas CSA1; CSA2, and CSA3 and three equal volumes V1; V2, and V3 of the first 6 cm of the nasal airvvay vvere measured and compared vvith baseline values.Results: After applying nasal dilator strips, CSAT and CSA2 significantly increased by 33% and 10%, respec- tively, vvith a significant increase in V1; vvhereas increases in V2 and V3 did not reach significance. The use of local decongestants vvas associated vvith signifi­ cant increases in CSA1; CSA2 , and CSA3 by 24%, 25%, and 18%, respectively, vvith a corresponding sig­ nificant increase in V2 by 20%. Combined use of a local decongestant and nasal dilator resulted in significant increases in ali areas and volumes compared vvith baseline values.Conclusion: Combined use of external nasal dilators and local nasal decongestants produces a cumulative effect on cross sectional areas and nasal cavity volumes.

Amaç: Burun genişletici bantların ve nazal dekonjestanilaçların tek tek ya da birlikte kullanıldıklarında burungeometrisi üzerinde etkileri araştırıldı.Olgular ve Yöntemler: Çalışmaya burun tıkanıklığısemptomları bulunmayan 23 gönüllü erkek alındı. Tüm olgularda aşağıdakiuygulamalardan sonra akustik rinometri ile hava yoludeğerlendirildi: i Hiçbir şey kullanmadan; ii plasebobant; iii burun genişletici bant; iv dekonjestan sprey; v dekonjestan sprey sonrası plasebo bant; vi dekonjestan sprey sonrası burun genişletici bant. Tüm ölçümlerde arakesitsel alanlar CSA1, CSA2ve CSA3parametreleri ile birlikte burun boşluğunun 6 cm’lik bölümüüç eşit bölüme ayrılarak hacimleri V1, V2ve V3olarakkaydedildi.Bulgular: Burun genişletici bant kullanıldıktan sonraCSA1 %33 ve CSA2 %10 değerlerinde anlamlı artışmeydana geldi; V’de anlamlı artış gözlenirken, V2veV3’te farklılık saptanmadı. Nazal dekonjestan kullanıldıktan sonra ortalama olarak CSA1’de %24, CSA’de %25,CSA3’te %18 artış saptandı ve bu artışlar bazal değerlere göre anlamlı bulundu; ayrıca, V2’de anlamlı artış %20 görüldü. Dekonjestan sonrasında genişletici bant uygulandığında, bazal değerlerle karşılaştırıldığında tüm bölümlerin ortalama alanlarında ve hacimlerinde anlamlı artış olduğu saptandı.Sonuç: Burun genişletici bant ve dekonjestanın birliktekullanılması, arakesitsel alanlarda ve burun hacimlerinde kümülatif artışlar meydana getirmektedir
