Abstract

Kentleşme, sanayileşmenin ve sanayileşme süreci ile ilişkili ekonomik gelişmelerin bir sonucu olarak kırsal alanlarda yaşayan insanların hayatta kalabilmek için tarım dışı ihtiyaç fazlası ürünlerin üretimini yaptığı veya sanayi üretimine dayalı yeni yerleşim yerlerinin ortaya çıkış sürecini ifade eder. Demografik açıdan ele alındığında ise kentleşme süreci, nüfusun kırsal yerleşim alanlarından kentsel alanlara doğru yayılmasına tekabül eder. Bu çerçevede kentsel alan ile kırsal alan arasındaki temel fark, nüfus yoğunluğunun düşük ve daha az farklılaşmış olduğu kırsal alanlara karşılık kentlerin daha büyük, daha yoğun ve daha heterojen bir nüfusu barındırmasıdır. Buna rağmen hangi tür yerleşim yerlerinin kentsel alan olduğu konusunda kesin bir ölçüt yoktur. Bu yüzden kent kavramı zaman içinde ve kültürden kültüre farklılık gösterebilmektedir.
