Kendisinden söz eden menâkıbnâmelere göre, Ahmed Yesevî tahmini 1093 yılında Batı Türkistan’daki Çimkent şehrinin doğusunda bulunan ve Tarım Irmağı’na dökülen Şâhyâr Nehri’nin küçük bir kolu olan Karasu üzerindeki Sayram kasabasında doğdu. Sayram’da İmâm Muhammed b.Ali neslinden gelenlere “Hâce” denildiği gibi, onlara bağlı olanlara da aynı isim veriliyordu. Ahmed Yesevî, bu silsileye bağlı olduğu için Hâce Ahmed, Hâce Ahmed Yesevî, Kul Hâce Ahmed şekillerinde de anılmaktadır. Bilinen ilmi bir gerçek te şudru ki; Ahmed Yesevî hakkında yapılan en kapsamlı çalışma Fuat Köprülü’nün Türk Edebiyatında İlk Mutasavvıflar adlı eseridir. Bu eserin ilk bölümünde de Ahmed Yesevî’nin menkıbevi ve tarihi hayatı ayrı ayrı ele alınarak ayrıntılı bir şekilde ortaya konmuştur. İşte biz bu çalışmamızda; olgun, ileri görüşlü, muhakemeli bir mutasavvıf ve aynı zamanda Hanefî mezhebinde bir fakih olan Ahmet Yesevî’yi, M. Fuad Köprülü’nün eserleri üzerinden, Köprülü’nün konuyu ele alışı ile doğru orantılı olacak şekilde kim olduğu ve gerçek tarihi kişiliğinin ne olduğu ile Yeseviyye tarikatı hakkında tespitlerde bulunmaya çalıştık.
