The affirmation in recent years of instruments of participatory democracy and deliberative democracy as a response to the “crisis of political representation” requires us to reflect on the real meaning of this “crisis” and on the peculiarities of the so-called “Participatory democracy” and “deliberative” democracy. The analysis of some contemporary experiences highlights the potential but also the limits of these tools and, more generally, reconfirms the complexity of the relationship between direct democracy and representative democracy. Thus, emerge the centrality of the role of political parties, of the electoral system and the significance of the prohibition of an imperative mandate. The analysis carried out leads to reaffirm the validity of representative democracy which can also be enriched by the grafting on it of forms of direct democracy.
