Abstract

Although the soil is considered the largest reservoir of microplastics, most studies emphasize the aquatic ecosystem, as they harbor an important biodiversity of both flora and fauna species and additionally all water currents have the oceans as their final destination, this means that all pollutant loads accumulate at that end point. Even wastewater treatment plants are an important means of this because they do not have adequate or sufficient mechanisms to completely remove microplastics. Although there are numerous studies focusing on the implementation and evaluation of systems that, along with the other processes carried out in a wastewater treatment plant, allow for quite significant removal of these microparticles, in Colombia studies of both determination and implementation of solution alternatives are very scarce. This is why, through the development of this case study, we are looking for the implementation of an alternative using an activated carbon and silica sand filter. That it allows to significantly minimize the presence of microplastics in the Rio Frio slope carried out by the Rio Frio WWTP located in the road ring, Girón-Floridablanca Santander.
