Abstract

This study was made to explain geological features of Afyonkarahisar and the surrounding area and to reveal neotectonic structure and seismicity of the region. The extensional tectonic regime, was occurred by Westward movement of the Anatolian plate is the characteristic feature of the Aegean Region. Afyonkarahisar located in extensional tectonic regime of southwestern Turkey. Akşehir-Simav Fault System (ASFS) is one of the high seismicity zone in this region. The large number of earthquakes occurred in different times on this tectonic zone and so ASFS’s southeastern and northwestern parts relaxed seismically. However, the most recent devastating earthquakes on fault segment between Çukurören and Çobanlar of the ASFS occurred in 1876 and therefore this region has seismic gap characteristic for 136 years. Due to the tectonic features of ASFS, 7 magnitude earthquake may occur in the region. Therefore, tectonic studies must be urgently conducted on fault segment between Çukurören and Çobanlar of the ASFS related to the investigation of time and frequency of earthquakes, shear rate of faults and online monitoring of seismic activity.

Bu çalışma, Afyonkarahisar ve çevresinin jeolojik özelliklerinin açıklanması, bölgenin neotektonik yapısının ve depremselliğinin ortaya konması amacıyla yapılmıştır. Anadolu levhasının batıya doğru hareket etmesinin sonucu olarak oluşan genişlemeli tektonik rejim Ege Bölgesinin karakteristik özelliğidir. Afyonkarahisar, güneybatı Türkiye’nin genişlemeli tektonik bölgesinde yer almakta olup, Akşehir-Simav Fay Sistemi (ASFS) bölgenin depremselliği yüksek kuşaklarından birisidir. Bu tektonik hat üzerinde değişik tarihlerde çok sayıda yıkıcı deprem meydana gelmiş olup, bu nedenle ASFS’nin güneydoğu ve kuzeybatı bölümleri sismik açıdan rahatlamıştır. Ancak, ASFS’nin Çobanlar ve Çukurören arasında kalan bölümden son 1876 yılında yıkıcı deprem meydana gelmiş olup, bu bölge 136 yıldır sismik boşluk özelliğindedir. ASFS’nin tektonik özellikleri nedeniyle bölgede 7 büyüklüğüne kadar deprem oluşma ihtimali vardır. Bu nedenle acil olarak, ASFS üzerinde değişik dönemlerde meydana gelen depremler, ASFS’nin bu bölümündeki fayların kayma hızı ve sismik hareketlerin anlık izlenmesine yönelik çalışmaların yapılması zorunludur.
