Kedilerde hipertiroidizm hastalığında radyoaktif iyot ve metimazol tedavilerinin karşılaştırılması

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of feline hyperthyroidism—the most common endocrine disorder in older cats—and to compare the therapeutic efficacy of methimazole and radioactive iodine treatments. Feline hyperthyroidism typically results from adenomatous hyperplasia or benign thyroid adenoma and is characterized by clinical signs such as weight loss, polyphagia, and polyuria/polydipsia. Fourteen cats diagnosed with hyperthyroidism were divided into two groups and treated with methimazole (Group I) or radioactive iodine (Group II). Blood samples were collected at weeks 0, 2, 12, and 24, and serum T4, ALT, ALP, total cholesterol, creatinine, and body weight were assessed. Data were analyzed using a mixed linear model to evaluate within-group changes and between-group differences over time. Both treatments were effective in improving thyroid hormone levels and metabolic parameters. However, radioactive iodine produced a faster and more pronounced reduction in T4 concentration, quicker normalization of cholesterol levels, and greater improvement in body weight. Methimazole showed a more gradual hormonal decline and required ongoing monitoring and dose adjustments. In conclusion, both methimazole and radioactive iodine were effective options for managing feline hyperthyroidism. Radioactive iodine may be preferred when rapid hormonal control is required, whereas methimazole remains suitable for patients requiring gradual adjustment. Monitoring of hepatic and renal functions is recommended for both treatment approaches.
