Within the painted ceiling of the Chiaromonte-Steri Palace, the Teutonic coat of arms serves as the catalyst for an analysis of the relationship between the Chiaromonte family and the Military Orders. Grounded in both iconographic and documentary evidence, this study reconstructs the function of imagery and memory in the articulation of seigniorial power in fourteenth-century Sicily.
