Abstract

Sulla base del significato letterale del sostantivo “rinascita”, il Rinascimento è stato tradizionalmente interpretato come un processo storico di decisivo, vivace rinnovamento in tutti i campi dell’agire umano e di radicale trasformazione della cultura dell’Occidente, dalla filosofia alle arti, dall’architettura alla medicina, dall’astronomia alla matematica, dalla fisica all’anatomia. Ciò coinvolge, naturalmente, anche la storia della geografia e della cartografia, settore in cui gli studiosi riconoscono alla cultura rinascimentale un ruolo fondamentale per la “rivoluzione cartografica scientifica” del XVIII secolo. Questa, infatti, trova le sue fondamenta nel periodo che va dalla fine del Medioevo a quella del XVI secolo, quando la cartografia cessa di essere l’espressione artistica dell’immagine del mondo e si trasforma gradualmente in un prodotto tecnico, risultato dell’applicazione di principi scientifico-matematici e di procedure di rilevamento sempre più perfezionate.
