Abstract

Il saggio chiude la sezione B.2 del manuale, dedicata al rito funebre. Non ad un culto è dedicato, bensì ad un cimitero: quello acattolico di Roma, accanto alla Piramide di Caio Cestio, che riconduce verso una dimensioe laica del luogo della memoria, dove le differenze vengono meno, dove uomini di diverse culture riposano gli uni accanto agli altri, ma senza che ogni sepolcro, ed ogni commemorato, rinunci alla propria identità. Quello acattolico è un cimitero che non troverà delle nuove storie poiché sono decadute quelle proibizioni che ne hanno determinato l’origine, vietando ai non cattolici di aver sepoltura all’interno dei camposanti consacrati. Proprio per questo si avvicina moltissimo alla concezione laica del cimitero moderno, dove tutti gli uomini possono egualmente essere sepolti: ne è l’anticipatore. Esprime bene il senso di un cimitero come luogo della memoria, dove allo stesso tempo sono ancor vive le personalità dei singoli e lo spirito collettivo, testimoniato da quelle tante visite giornaliere che i passanti o gli ospiti qui intenzionalmente diretti fanno al camposanto, omaggiando e riconoscendosi in quel variegato popolo che qui in modesta parte giace e che la storia ha costruito.
