Abstract

Il saggio fa parte della sezione B.2 del manuale, dedicata al rito funebre delle principali religioni e parla del culto Islamico. Ne traccia una breve storia, e ne descrive le caratteristiche principali e le tradizioni e i costumi legati al momento della morte: dall'articolazione del rito funebre alle prescrizioni relative alla sepoltura e quindi, infine, alla struttura dei luoghi dedicati alla memoria dei defunti. Vengono infine illustrati due cimiteri, uno antico e uno moderno. Il primo è quello di Eyüp, ad Istambul, gremito di steli tutte apparentemente volte al Corno d'Oro, ma in realtà con lo sguardo più profondo indirizzato alla Mecca. Il secondo è il cimitero islamico ad Altach, nel paesaggio austriaco bordato dalle Alpi, progettato dall'architetto Bernardo Bader.
