Abstract

Sullo spunto delle immagini grafiche che hanno illustrato le rovine di Tivoli e Villa Adriana, dal XV al XIX secolo, viene tracciato un profilo dell’influenza che questi monumenti, soprattutto nel loro complesso ma equilibrato rapporto tra architettura e natura, hanno avuto nella cultura europea, dal Rinascimento al Romanticismo. Se nel Rinascimento e nel Barocco la sistematica ricerca archeologica dei maggiori architetti poteva trarre spunti significativi anche dalle antichità tiburtine, con la nascita della pittura di paesaggio, in particolare con Gaspard Dughet e Claude le Lorrain, la suggestione delle rovine di Tivoli ebbe ancor più successo. Questi successivi influssi si possono riconoscere non solo nella progettazione di edifici quali la Bank of England di sir John Soane o l’Hotel de Thelusson di C. N. Ledoux, ma anche nelle arti figurative e – soprattutto – nelle nuove tendenze dell’architettura dei giardini.
