The Aragonese Castle of Otranto. The role of knowledge in the restoration project

Abstract

Taranto Castle, a key part of the Old City's defensive system, stands on a site comprising the remains of several fortifications built in succession since the 3rd century BC. Since 1861, it has been used as a barracks for the Italian Navy, which, after the war, began dismantling the post-unification additions and, since 2003, has undertaken archaeological excavation and restoration campaigns. Convinced that restoration cannot ignore an understanding of historical events, it was essential to directly and indirectly analyze the monument, its constituent materials, construction techniques, stratigraphy, and the forms of degradation that define its unique and unrepeatable identity. The project addresses complex and highly interrelated issues: the need to conserve the ancient material and the signs of historical stratification, with the aim of restoring the castle's spatial and formal coherence.
