Abstract

I grandi progressi compiuti dalla scienza dei materiali negli ultimi decenni hanno offerto al progetto di artefatti nuove e inconsuete opportunità di interpretazione dei tradizionali concetti di famiglia di materiali, di proprietà e di ambito di applicazione che in passato hanno caratterizzato la selezione dei materiali nell’attività di designer, architetti e artisti. I materiali contemporanei acquisiscono un contenuto di informazione e di funzionalizzazione sempre più elevato. Possono essere progettati per adattarsi a esigenze ed applicazioni anche molto complesse, e per avvertire e reagire a stimoli e sollecitazioni in modo sempre più simile ai sistemi viventi. Tutto questo richiede nuove chiavi di lettura e nuovi strumenti cognitivi per approcciare alla scelta dei materiali più adatti a tradurre le volontà espressive del design e dell’arte.
