Abstract

The topic of universal accessibility is considered to be highly relevant from the social point of view and is assuming a fundamental role for the enhancement and fruition of cultural heritage. It is aimed at people who present both temporary both permanent conditions of sensory, motor or psychic disability. In fact, denying the possibility of fully perceiving the space or object of cultural interest is equivalent to favoring discriminatory conditions. The design of conservation and valorization works on archaeological areas, historic buildings and monumental architectures, requires a new awareness, aimed at the inclusiveness of different categories of users (Cemoli et al, 2017). This research is aimed at defining a methodological approach, rather than strictly technical and operational, in line with the theme of Universal Design in cultural heritage. The case study is the medieval castle of Francolise, in the province of Caserta. Located in Terra di Lavoro, it was built starting from the second half of the ninth century by the Normans, probably at the request of St. Tommaso d’Aquino. After some recent, but not organic, interventions of maintenance and structural consolidation, today it appears in semi-abandoned conditions. The aim of the work is to obtain a deep knowledge of the monument from a morphometric point of view through the systematic three-dimensional survey conducted according to scientific protocols and with reliable instruments. In fact, infographic models obtained from laser-scanning and/or photomodeling, metrically and formally responding to reality, represent the fundamental database to evaluate design hypotheses coherent with the enlarged accessibility strategies. This is also possible thanks to the new possibilities offered by Computer Vision through the simulation of the architectural and functional impact in virtual and augmented reality specifically built.
