Abstract

Tra la metà del XIV e gli inizi del XVI secolo il regno di Napoli fu funestato dalle guerre che contrapposero i diversi rami della dinastia angioina, gli Angiò e gli Aragona, la Francia e la Spagna, fino all'inclusione di Napoli nel sistema imperiale spagnolo. Il commercio era dominato dagli operatori stranieri, provenienti dalla Toscana e dalla Catalogna. Secondo l'interpretazione tradizionale, in questo periodo le città meridionali e le loro elite, nonostante la crescita della propria autonomia, furono oppresse dalla monarchia e dai baroni, sul piano politico, e colonizzati dai mercanti stranieri, sul piano economico. Questa lettura è stata contestata negli ultimi due decenni. Monarchia, baroni, città, mercanti stranieri sono ancora al centro della storia napoletana, ma la ricerca ha radicalmente cambiato la visione del loro potere reale e delle relazioni complesse e mutevoli che intercorrevano tra loro.
