Cosa sono (davvero) gli studi di genere o gender studies

Abstract

Le differenze tra donne e uomini possono essere ricondotte a due grandi dimensioni: quella che ha a che fare con il “sesso” e quella che ha a che fare con il “genere”. Gli “studi di genere” o gender studies, come vengono chiamati nel mondo anglosassone, costituiscono un approccio multidisciplinare allo studio dei significati di ciò che oggi definiamo genere: l’insieme dei processi, delle modalità di comportamento e delle relazioni sociali — culturalmente “approvati” dalla società — attraverso cui le culture organizzano la divisione dei ruoli e dei compiti tra donne e uomini e li differenziano sulla base del sistema dei valori presente in ogni cultura e comunità. Il problema che sta alla base di ciò che, in maniera del tutto approssimativa e talvolta sprezzante, viene chiamata “teoria di genere”, è il fatto che non esiste una teoria unica, ma una serie di posizioni e prospettive scientifiche diverse sul concetto di genere che non sono create dal nulla, ma nascono dal pensiero di studiosi e di intellettuali, in contesti e tempi storici differenti.
