Abstract

Spesso citata per l’ideale contesa tra il padiglione tedesco di Albert Speer e quello sovietico di Boris Jofan, per il provocatorio Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux di Le Corbusier, o ancora per il prezioso edificio della Finlandia di Alvar Aalto, resa famosa dalla denuncia alle dittature “urlata” dal Guernica di Pablo Picasso nel padiglione spagnolo di Josep Lluis Sert e Luis Lacasa, Paris 1937. Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne è emblematica del complesso dibattito culturale degli anni Trenta, in cui spirito nazionale, tradizioni artistiche regionali e tecniche moderne si confrontano e si fondono in un’immagine varia e articolata. Ma segna anche un importante momento di riflessione sul ruolo dei “grandi eventi” quali motori per la trasformazione dell’assetto urbanistico cittadino. Il lungo e acceso dibattito vede, tra gli altri, Le Corbusier schierato in prima fila a favore: dapprima di una manifestazione consacrata al tema delle moderne tecniche di costruzione dell’alloggio, volta a dare vita a un quartiere residenziale integrato alla città; quindi di una gigantesca unità di abitazione al Bastion Kellermann, e infine di un enorme museo a crescita illimitata. Tra aspre polemiche, l’Expo si svolgerà tuttavia all’insegna dell’effimero, sullo stesso sito degli eventi precedenti: 100 ettari estesi lungo la Senna e, trasversalmente, dalla Place du Trocadéro all’École Militaire. Ciononostante, con i contestati Palais de Chaillot di Jacques Carlu, Louis Boileau e Jean-Pierre Azéma, e Palais de Tokio di Jean Aubert, Jean-Claude Dondel, Paul Viard et Marcel Dastugue, con il bel Musée des Travaux Publics di Auguste Perret, lascerà ugualmente tracce significative nel cuore del XVI arrondissement.
