Abstract

La Cronaca al centro di questo volume, redatta alla metà del Trecento da un autore anonimo, costituisce il monumento storico-letterario più significativo dedicato a Roma nel medioevo. Redatta in un volgare romanesco scomparso ormai da secoli, conserva viva l’immagine degli uomini della generazione di Cola di Rienzo, e rappresenta un mirabile esempio di riflessione e di narrazione storica. Sul piano letterario, solo la prosa di Boccaccio ne sopravanza nel Trecento l’eleganza espressiva e la raffinata rappresentazione psicologica della natura umana: critici e scrittori del rango di Contini e di Gadda furono affascinati da questo testo. In questo libro – destinato non solo agli studiosi, ma ad una più ampia cerchia di lettori – Gustav Seibt analizza la Cronaca con gli strumenti del metodo storico e di quello critico-letterario, fornendoci la prima monografia moderna sull’opera e sul suo anonimo autore. Un romano del XIV secolo dalla personalità sorprendentemente originale, che non condivideva l’immagine idealizzata di Roma propria di tanti suoi contemporanei, come Cola di Rienzo e Petrarca, consapevole che il passato è passato e che il presente, qualsiasi esso sia, deve sempre costituire, a suo modo, qualcosa di nuovo.
