Relazioni tra FoMO, ON-FoMO, smartphone addiction e narcisismo: uno studio sui giovani adulti italiani

Abstract

La crescente pervasività dei social media e l’uso intensivo dello smartphone hanno sollevato interrogativi sul loro impatto psicologico. Tra i fenomeni più studiati vi sono la Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), definita come la preoccupazione pervasiva di essere esclusi da esperienze gratificanti altrui, e la sua declinazione online (ON-FoMO). La letteratura ha ipotizzato possibili relazioni tra questi costrutti, l’uso problematico dello smartphone e il narcisismo. Il presente studio indaga le associazioni tra FoMO, ON-FoMO, smartphone addiction e narcisismo in un campione di 311 giovani adulti italiani (66.2% donne), di età compresa tra i 18 e i 35 anni (M = 23.5; SD = 3.5). Sono state testate tre ipotesi: (1) che livelli più elevati di FoMO sono associati a livelli più elevati di narcisismo; (2) che FoMO e narcisismo sono positivamente correlati; (3) che esiste una correlazione positiva tra l’uso problematico dello smartphone e narcisismo. I risultati supportano le ipotesi proposte e mostrano che FoMO e smartphone addiction sono significativamente associate al narcisismo. Inoltre, la FoMO risulta essere il predittore più forte sia per il narcisismo grandioso che per quello vulnerabile, mentre l’ON-FoMO risulta essere un predittore significativo solo per il narcisismo vulnerabile. Lo studio contribuisce a chiarire le relazioni tra le diverse variabili prese in esame, dimostrando come la FOMO possa indurre comportamenti narcisistici, alimentati non solo tramite social media ma anche attraverso lo smartphone.
