Potere femminile, potere della mater

Abstract

L'analisi del ruolo femminile, oggi condotta a tutto tondo attraverso ricerche che vanno ben oltre lo spazio riservato agli studi di genere, evidenzia sempre più la necessità di avvalersi del supporto di discipline specialistiche, utili a delineare le molteplici sfaccettature di tale ruolo nei diversi contesti. In particolare, la numismatica, dato il carattere di ufficialità del documento monetale, riveste un'importanza sempre maggiore nelle definizione della funzione femminile all'interno della corte imperiale. Il ruolo delle cosiddette "imperatrici" assumeva certamente una rilevanza particolare innanzitutto nel garantire la continuità della dinastia, ma anche nella costruzione dell'immagine complessiva della domus che, a partire dall'epoca augustea, costituì il supporto ideologico fondamentale della istituzione imperiale.
